The Versa Operating SystemTM (VOSTM) Lite software is a version of the VOS software that has been optimized for use on small form-factor devices. Specifically, you can use the VOS Lite software on Versa ARM CPU–based wireless access points (APs) and on Intel Atom-based two-core and four-core CPU-based Versa Cloud Service Gateway 350 (CSG350) and Versa CSG730 appliances that have 4 GB of RAM and that are running Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) as their base operating system. To achieve the optimization, the following advanced security features are deactivated in the VOS Lite software: application delivery controller (ADC), data loss prevention (DLP), kernel crash dump (kdump), and universal CPE (uCPE).

This article describes the VOS Lite software images and describes how to install the VOS Lite software on VOS devices.

VOS Lite Software Images

The VOS Lite software is provided as a WSM image. The VOS Lite .bin and .iso software images have the suffix –lite in the package name, for example:

versa-flexvnf-20231226-050000-8fdc3e0-22.1.3-B-lite.wsm.bin
versa-flexvnf-989a6dc-22.1.3-B-lite.wsm.iso

To display the name of the VOS Lite software package, issue the following CLI command:

cli> show system package-info

VOS Lite and VOS Support

You can install the VOS Lite software on a branch device that is already running the full-featured VOS software. You can also re-install the full-featured VOS software on a device that is running the VOS Lite software using the CLI. All branch devices must be running Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) as the base operating system.

The following table describes the software packages for installing the VOS Lite and VOS software.

Existing Software Package VOS Device Memory Requirements Supported VOS Lite Package Upgrades
21.2.x-wsm 4 GB or less 22.1.3-lite-wsm
22.1.2-wsm 4 GB or less 22.1.3-lite-wsm
22.1.3-lite-wsm 4 GB or less 22.1.3-lite-wsm and later

Note: You can install VOS Lite only on devices 4 GB or memory or less.

Before You Begin

Before you install the VOS Lite image on a device running the full-featured VOS software, do the following:

  • Download the VOS Lite image file to the Director node. For more information, see Download Controller and VOS Software Image to Director Node.
  • If the device configuration includes advanced features that are not supported in the VOS Lite image, you must remove the configuration for those features. The following features are not supported in the VOS Lite image:
    • Application delivery controller (ADC)
    • Data loss prevention (DLP)
    • Kernel crash dump (kdump)
    • Universal CPE (uCPE)

If you have configured any of these advanced features from the CLI, you must remove these commands from the configuration. If you do not remove them, when you commit a VOS Lite configuration, the commit fails and an error message is displayed. The following are some of the commands for configuring advanced features that you must remove from the configuration:

  • set orgs org-services tenant-name adc
  • set orgs org-services tenant-name security profiles dlp
