You can enable a Versa Operating System^TM (VOS^TM) device to operate in maintenance mode so that you can perform administrative tasks, such as upgrading the software on the device. When a VOS device is in maintenance mode, other devices are expected to route traffic around the VOS device that is in maintenance mode.

When a VOS device is in maintenance mode, the routing protocols behave as follows:

• BGP appends the well-known community of 65535:0 (GRACEFUL_SHUTDOWN) to the routes advertised by the VOS device. When another VOS device or a router receives a route with this community, the devices set the local preference of the route to 0. Routes with a preference value of 0 are considered to be the least preferred. Note that you can create an import policy to override this local preference value. You can also create a routing peer policy that uses the 65535:0 community as a match condition, as illutrated in the following screenshot:
  
  
   
• OSPF sets the router LSA metric to 65535, which causes other routers to select alternate VOS devices or routers for forwarding.
• PIM announces a designated router (DR) priority value of 0 so that other PIM routers are more preferred to become the designated router.
• All VRRP groups, except the special groups configured with a priority of 255, are placed into INIT state. As a result, hosts do no use the VOS device for forwarding.
