Monitor Devices Attached to a Director Node Using External Monitoring Tools

You can use external tools to monitor devices attached to a Director node. When using these tools, follow these guidelines:

  • When you send REST API requests to a Director node, use open authentication (OAuth) instead of basic authentication.
  • To retrieve API status from all VOS devices through the Director node, stream alarms and events from the Analytics node to a log collector rather than using live API calls. The status information provided by live API calls is often not complete, because it is collected only every 5 seconds. For example, if an interface flaps and comes back up within 2 seconds, a live API status report misses the interface flap alarm.
  • Limit the number of monitor API calls that you send to a Director node to fewer than 50 per second.
  • To optimize the Director user experience, follow the Versa-recommended sizing for Director nodes. For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements for Headend.
  • To retrieve alarm and log information, it is recommended that you use streaming alarms and events sent from the Analytics node to the log collector instead of using pull models, such as API calls to the Director node and SNMP walk.
