Create SD-WAN Spoke Groups

Versa-logo-release-icon.png For supported software information, click here.

When setting up an SD-WAN, you can create spoke groups that help you direct traffic between the Controller node and specific Versa Operating SystemTM (VOSTM) branches or hubs. You create spoke groups on the Director node and then push them to the branches or hubs.

You can configure three types of spoke groups:

  • Spoke to hub—Set up a connection between a spoke and a hub. With this type of configuration, there is no communication between spokes, either directly or through a hub. This type of configuration is preferred when you use a hub as a gateway to go out from spoke site.
  • Spoke to spoke via hub—Set up a connection between two spokes through a hub. With this type of configuration there is no direct communication between spokes. The spokes have a default route towards the hub. Spokes are blocked from importing routes directly from other spokes. In this case, the hub receives routes from the spoke and exports them to the other spokes.
  • Spoke to spoke direct—Set up a direct connection between two spokes, bypassing a hub. With this type of configuration, the two spokes must be in the same spoke group. A spoke can receive LAN routes directly from one spoke to the other spoke.

The spoke devices that are in the same spoke group share the same group properties.

To create a spoke group:

  1. In Director view, select the Workflows tab in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Template > Spoke Groups in the left menu bar.

    Field Description
Name (Required) Enter a name for the spoke group.
Organization (Required) Select the name of the organization. The organization can be a provider or a customer. Based on the selected organization, the system populates the routing instances and the hubs.
Region Select the region in which to place the spoke group.
Hub, Hub Controller Click to select the type of hub.
Spoke Group Type Select the type of spoke group:
    • Spoke to Hub Only
    • Spoke to Spoke via Hub
    • Spoke to Spoke Direct
    • Spoke to Spoke Direct across Regions (for hub controllers only)
Community For the Spoke to Spoke Direct spoke group type, select the name of the community. Click + Community Options to add community names and identifiers.
    Priority

Select a value to set the local preference for the hub. If you select a numeric preference value (1 through 8), the local preference value is subtracted from the maximum number of hubs. If you select the priority Not Used, the local preference is set to 100.
Note that, unlike hubs and full-mesh branches, spokes ignore the preferences set by the HA pair hubs, which are 110 for routes learned from the primary hub and 109 for routes advertised by the standby (secondary) hub. The priority values you assign here override the two priorities set by the HA pair hubs.
Values: 1 through 8, Not Used
    Default: Not Used

  4. Click Save.
